Holiday Treats for Pets
The holiday season is in full swing! Food is a big part of many seasonal events and celebrations. Your pet will definitely enjoy a special treat or two. Just be very careful with what you offer your furry pal. Many of those delicious seasonal meals are toxic to dogs and cats! Read on as a local Lakeville, MN vet lists some safe holiday treats for pets.
Safe Foods
Meat, fish, and poultry are all safe for pets. These things are also Fluffy and Fido’s favorite foods! There are a few caveats to remember here, however. Never give your four-legged buddy meat on the bone. This is a serious choking hazard, and can be very dangerous! You’ll also want to make sure that your furry friend’s food is completely cooked, and free of seasonings and toppings. Be sure to remove the skin and fat as well. Another thing to keep in mind is that certain meats, such as organ meats and processed foods, should only be fed on occasion. They’re fine as a special snack, but can be unhealthy if eaten too often.
Unsafe Foods
Many of our favorite holiday foods are toxic to dogs and cats. Never give your furry pal anything that contains garlic, onions, scallions, or chives. (Note: these things are particularly concerning, as they are often used as seasonings.) Chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, nuts, and products containing xylitol are also on the no-no list. You’ll also want to avoid giving your four-legged pal grapes, currants, or raisins; raw dough, meat, or yeast; processed foods; and anything that contains a lot of sugar or fat. Ask your vet for more information on safe and unsafe foods.
Homemade Goodies
Do you like cooking? Why not make your pet some special snacks? There are lots of great recipes online. You can also experiment, and make your own. Just be sure to only use ingredients that are safe for your furry companion. Some good options are shredded meat; bacon bits; whole-wheat flour; olive oil; cheese; eggs; and sodium-free broth. Plain yogurt is also fine, as are ripe bananas, pureed pumpkin, organic baby food, and canned chicken or tuna in water.
