Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day

Did you know that there is a special day reserved just for honoring Bulldogs? April 21st is Bulldogs are Beautiful Day! These amiable pooches are definitely worth celebrating. They are both sweet and adorable, and can certainly melt hearts. Read on as a local Lakeville, MN vet discusses Bulldogs.

History

The AKC officially recognized Bulldogs in 1886, but these cute pups have actually been around much longer than that. In fact, references to Bulldogs have been found in literature dating back to 1500! While the English Bulldog may be the most popular and well-known Bulldog, the American and French Bulldogs are just as lovable.

Temperament

Bulls may be known for being aggressive, but Bulldogs could not be more different. They’re actually very gentle and loving, and want nothing more than to hang out with their human pals. Bulldogs are often great with kids, and are both patient and sturdy enough to put up with some roughhousing from active toddlers. It’s also worth noting that Bulldogs are definitely not the most athletic of our canine friends. In fact, they’re actually pretty lazy.

Activity

As you may know, Bulldogs are brachycephalic. Because of the shape of their airways, they can get winded very easily. Swimming and running are not suitable exercises for them, for this reason. However, your four-legged buddy will still need regular exercise, of course, even if it’s just a daily walk. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Grooming Needs

One great thing about Bulldogs is that they really don’t need much grooming. If you brush Fido regularly, you probably will only need to bathe him once in a while. However, you will need to keep your canine buddy’s ears and face clean. All those wrinkles make great hiding places for bacteria! Ask your vet for more information.

Gear

We recommend that Bulldogs wear harnesses, instead of regular collars. This is because they get winded very easily, and can be choked by neck collars. Fido will also need a comfy doggy bed to snooze off in.

Heat

Bulldogs can overheat very easily, and have a hard time cooling off when they do. On hot days, keep Fido cool and comfy in climate-controlled rooms. Also, make sure your canine pal always has lots of fresh water.
