7 Ways to Stop Your Dog From Digging
Is your canine companion leaving holes in your yard? Fido is a super cute and lovable pet, but he isn’t exactly a master landscaper. We are here to help! Read on as a Lakeville, MN vet lists some ways to keep your pet from digging.
Basics
Dogs sometimes dig themselves little dens so they can get relief from weather or parasites. Make sure that Fido’s outdoor area is comfortable for him by providing suitable shade and shelter as well as plenty of fresh water. Keeping up with your pup’s parasite control is also important.
Sandbox
Does your pup dig random holes in the yard? Build Fido a little doghouse, and bury some toys and treats in it for your furry little pirate to dig up. If your pooch knows where the fun stuff is, he may leave the rest of the yard alone.
Pest Control
If Fido is digging in straight lines, he may be after a small animal that is burrowing under your yard. Use humane, nontoxic methods to get rid of your uninvited guests.
Toys
Boredom is another cause for digging in dogs. Check your pet’s outdoor area. Does Fido have toys to play with when he’s outside? If not, bring some durable puppy playthings outdoors for him.
Puppy Play Zone
Another thing that can help is to divide your yard up into segments, and give Fido his own area to run and play in. Ask your vet for recommendations.
Exercise
Make sure your dog is getting enough activity. Most dogs need at least a daily walk, though every pooch is different, so ask your vet for specific advice. Exercise is very important for Fido, as it helps keep him fit and lets him burn off excess energy. It also helps with behavioral issues: after a good walk or a fun play session, your furry friend will be a bit tired, and likely more interested in napping than in starting a new gardening project.
Spay/Neuter
Dogs that are intact tend to be more prone to digging than pets that have been fixed. If your four-legged pal hasn’t been spayed or neutered yet, we advise getting this done ASAP. Fido may very well be trying to go looking for love!
