Summertime Safety for Dogs

Summer is officially here! This is a great time of year to spend some quality time with your canine buddy. Fido loves fun outdoor activities, like visiting doggy parks and playing Fetch outdoors. However, hot weather can be dangerous for Man’s Best Friend, so you’ll want to take precautions to keep your pet happy and safe as the dog days of summer approach. A Lakeville, MN vet discusses summer safety for dogs below.

Basics

First things first! Make sure Fido is microchipped, wearing ID tags, and up to date on his vaccinations and parasite control. As the saying goes, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Heat

Overheating can make Fido very sick, and can even be deadly. Make sure your furry pal always has plenty of fresh water and access to cool, shady areas. On really hot days, limit your pup’s outdoor time during the middle of the day, when it’s hottest out. Your dog may also appreciate having a cool water bottle in his bed. You can also drop an ice cube into his bowl to cool the water off.

Paw Care

If you’ve ever walked barefoot on hot surfaces, you know how painful that can be. Fido can burn his sensitive paw pads by walking or running on hot or harsh surfaces. Try to keep your canine friend on soft ground, and use paw balm or wax to protect his feet. Take extra care after your pooch has been swimming: just like human skin, dogs’ paws are extra delicate when they’re wet.

Swimming

Some dogs love swimming! This isn’t safe or suitable for every pooch, however. Be sure to get your vet’s approval before taking Fido to a pool or beach. If your canine pal gets the all-clear, just be sure to put his safety first. Always supervise your pup closely at the water, and never leave him unattended.

Thunderstorms

Does Fido turn into a furry bundle of fear when it’s thundering out? Before the storm approaches, tire your furry friend out with a long walk and a vigorous play session. Then, set him up in his crate or a quiet back room with food, treats, toys, and bedding. Turn a TV or radio on to mask the noise. Pet-calming products, such as shirts, treats, or sprays, can also help.
