Happy Healthy Cat Month
September is officially Happy, Healthy Cat Month! Of course, if you were to ask Fluffy, she would likely insist that every month is Happy, Healthy Cat Month . . . and she wouldn’t be wrong! Here, a Lakeville, MN vet discusses keeping your kitty content and purring.
Proper nutrition is critical to your cute pet’s health! Ask your vet for recommendations for feeding Fluffy, including serving sizes, suitable treats, and supplements.
Make sure Fluffy’s litterbox is in a quiet, private spot that is easy for her to access. Kitties like their bathrooms nice and clean. We recommend scooping daily, and changing the litter every week.
While Fluffy would probably rather spend her time napping or playing with catnip mice, regular veterinary care is crucial to her health! We recommend that cats be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on their exams and parasite control products. You’ll also want to contact your vet immediately if you notice any signs of illness, such as hiding, poor grooming, or changes in behavior or vocalizations. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Offer Fluffy lots of toys to play with, and take time to play with her every day. Your kitty should also have at least one comfy window seat with a good view, so she can watch birds and squirrels. If you will be gone after dark, leave a light and radio on, so your cat isn’t left by herself in a dark, quiet house.
To make your home safe for your cat, do some kittyproofing, and remove or secure potentially-dangerous items, such as toxic plants, plastic bags, and small or sharp objects. We also recommend keeping Fluffy indoors. Ask your vet for more information.
Fluffy will definitely appreciate having some things she doesn’t have to share with her human servants. Buy or make your kitty plenty of beds and napping spots. Your furball will also appreciate having some vertical space, such as a cat tower or wall-mounted furniture.
To keep Fluffy purring, pay lots of attention to her. Talk to her, play with her, and let her snuggle up on your lap if she wants. Just like any other pet, cats need to feel loved to really be happy!
